India’s Passport Ranking Falls to 125th; Sweden Leads Top 10 Powerful Passports List
The latest Global Passport Index 2026 reveals a setback for Indian travellers as India's passport ranking slipped to the 125th spot. While Sweden leads a European-dominated top ten list the Indian passport continues to face major mobility restrictions globally.
India’s passport ranking has slipped to the 125th position in the newly released Global Passport Index 2026 by Global Citizen Solutions. Last year, India maintained the 124th position on the passport list.
The new ranking means another year out of the top 100 countries with strong passports for India.
The drop in the latest ranking highlights a big gap in global travel mobility for Indians and leaving many frequent flyers wondering why one of the world’s largest economies is facing major border restrictions.
It’s interesting to note that the overall composite score of India actually hit a 45.1 which is a 5 year high for the country. Yet India’s passport ranking still fell behind when compared to other European nations which managed to completely rule the list of the top 10 Henley passport index in 2026.
Why did India's Passport Ranking Fall Despite a Record Score?
The Global Passport Index 2026 assesses countries through an overall evaluation rather than just counting vacation spots. It uses a composite score combining three major pillars:
-
Enhanced Mobility (50%),
-
Quality of Living (25%), and
-
Investment Opportunities (25%).
In the case of quality of life ranking this year India reached the 11th spot from the previously held 118th ranking. But its international mobility score dragged India’s overall average down. On the mobility index alone India positions lower at 136th.
Currently Indian passport holders can access only 26 countries completely visa-free or via visa-on-arrival including neighbouring countries like Bhutan and Nepal alongside global destinations like Jamaica, Macau, and Barbados.
But for 88 major first world countries like US, UK, EU nations, and the UAE there is a strict pre-travel visa requirement.
Sweden takes the No.1 Spot in the Global Passport Index in 2026
As usual European countries completely dominate the top ten list of the 2026 passport rankings due to their unparalleled combinations of strong investment landscapes, high quality of living, and borderless travel.
Amongst the top European countries Sweden claims the number 1 spot as the world's most powerful passport this year with an incredible overall score of 96.05 out of 100.
