UPSC Introduces Real Time Face Authentication System in Civil Services Prelims 2026
Learn how UPSC used new face recognition technology during the 2026 Civil Services Prelims to prevent cheating and make candidate verification faster.
The Union Public Service Commission has successfully implemented its newly introduced face authentication system during the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026. The move is aimed at making the exam process more secure, transparent and free from impersonation. With this system in place candidates were verified in real time at examination centres by matching their live facial image with the photograph submitted during the application process.
The new face authentication system was introduced through an Android based mobile application developed by UPSC with technical support from the National e-Governance Division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. According to the commission the app was used at the time of entry into examination halls where each candidate had to complete face verification before being allowed inside. Fast and Scalable Verification at Exam Centres
One of the biggest highlights of the new system was its speed and ease of use. UPSC said that the authentication process took only around 6-8 seconds per candidate. This helped avoid delays and reduced the chances of long queues forming outside exam centres especially during peak entry hours. The system also showed strong performance at scale. It supported more than 7,000 invigilators using the application at the same time while around 12,000 authentications were processed per minute.
Another key benefit was that the app did not need any special hardware. It worked smoothly on standard Android smartphones, allowing invigilators to use their own mobile devices instead of depending on separate machines or expensive equipment. To ensure smooth implementation across the country UPSC also shared a detailed Standard Operating Procedure with states, districts and exam venues. This helped create a clear process for officials involved in conducting the examination.

A Major Step Towards Exam Integrity and Transparency
UPSC Chairman Dr Ajay Kumar explained that the main purpose of the new system is to ensure that the examination remains free from impersonation. He also said the technology was developed in house with support from NeGD and that the biggest challenge was implementing it on such a large scale.
The successful use of real time face authentication in Civil Services Prelims 2026 marks an important step in modernising India’s examination system. This shows how technology can be used not only to improve efficiency but also to protect the credibility of highly competitive exams.
