Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Changes PSEB Tie-Breaking Rule After Student Raises Concern
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced a major change in the PSEB ranking rule after a Class 10 student questioned the age-based tie-breaker during the Sitare Zameen Te event in Chandigarh.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced to change PSEB tie breaking rule after a student raised this issue during a public event in Chandigarh. The announcement was made at “Sitare Zameen Te” program where the state government honoured top performing students of class 8, 10 and 12. The moment gained attention when a class 10 student from Amritsar openly questioned why age was being used to decide ranks among students who have scored the same marks. The student explained that three girls from the same district had earned equal marks but were given different ranks just because of their different ages. Earlier as per the rule the youngest student was placed higher in the merit list. Speaking confidently she said that all students work equally hard and should be treated fairly when results are announced.
Why This PSEB Rule Change Matters for Students
The student’s question led to an important response from the Chief Minister. While trying to reassure her, Bhagwant Mann eventually directed the education department to change the system. He announced that from now onwards rank will be decided only on the basis of marks and not age. This means students with the same score will now be given equal recognition. This decision has been made to support fairness and gives proper value to students' efforts. For many students and parents rank matters not only because of pride but also for recognition at school, districts and state levels. A rule based only on marks feels more transparent and more easy to accept.Punjab government has sent a strong message that student concerns matter and fair evaluation should always come first.
