The proposal had earlier received a no objection from the Union government before being cleared by the state cabinet. The name is kept after the belief that the town is the birthplace of Lord Pashuram. Along with the town, the Jalalabad Nagar Palika Parishad will also be renamed Parshurampuri Nagar Palika Parishad. According to the Uttar Pradesh government, the town is widely believed to be the birthplace of Lord Parshuram, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Residents have been demanding the name change for several years. They argued that the town’s name should reflect its sacred and ethnic heritage. The municipal council passed a recommendation supporting the renaming in 2018 and 2023. After which the proposal was forwarded to the Centre and later approved by the state cabinet.
