Agnimitra Paul, the BJP MLA won the Asansol Dakshin seat against the TMC's Tapas Banerjee with a margin of 40839 votes.

As quoted by Rajnath Singh on X (formerly Twitter), "The people of West Bengal have put their stamp of approval on the politics of development, good governance, and transparency—long awaited for decades—by giving the Bharatiya Janata Party a historic mandate, and have chosen the path of change and progress. Ending a decade-long drought, the BJP has successfully infiltrated the TMC’s most fortified urban strongholds with early victories in Howrah Central, North Kolkata, Kalimpong, Raniganj, and other constituencies, indicating a clear sign that the "Saffron Surge" has arrived as the BJP breaches the 200 mark in West Bengal.

As of now, the Election Commission has officially confirmed six victories for the BJP. The party has successfully converted two major leads into declared wins, including a significant takeover of the historic Medinipur seat and a total sweep of the North Bengal hills.

New Results Confirmed

• Medinipur: Sankar Kumar Guchhait secured a landslide victory with a margin of 38,747 votes. After 21 rounds of counting and 133,041 total votes tallied, the BJP has firmly captured this pivotal political hub.

• Darjeeling: Noman Rai won by 6,057 votes following 17 rounds of counting. This win, paired with the earlier victory in Kalimpong, ensures the BJP holds both key hill constituencies.

The BJP’s official "won" column now includes Darjeeling and Medinipur alongside the four previously confirmed seats: Asansol Dakshin, Kalimpong, Monteswar, and Bhatar.

Declared Victories

The West Bengal Assembly elections have only been announced for two seats, but the counting trends suggest that the BJP will win handily in the state where it has never previously held power. It seems that the Trinamool is far too small to form a government.

Mamata Banerjee Extends Lead, But Adhikari Remains Confident In a significant trend from South Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee has extended her advantage in Bhabanipur to 1,996 votes. This provides the Chief Minister with a modest cushion as counting progresses through the mid-stages. However, with many rounds still to be tallied, the BJP's Suvendu Adhikari has urged caution, predicting that the true direction of the seat will only be clear in the later rounds of the day.

Regardless of today’s final tally, the results will remain inseparable from the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. A massive 91 lakh voters, nearly 12% of the entire electorate were purged from the lists leading up to the polls. While the Election Commission maintains the exercise was a necessary "purification" of the rolls, the scale of the deletions has sparked a political firestorm. Of those removed, approximately 27 lakh individuals were flagged following a judicial adjudication process.

The BJP has crossed the magic number (148) and is currently in the "Super Majority" zone with 201 seats. They are on track to form the government in West Bengal for the first time. Ratna Debnath (mother of the RG Kar victim) is leading by over 2,700 votes, a major symbolic win for the BJP in Panihati.

The official counting of votes for the high-stakes 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections has officially commenced this morning amidst a massive, multi-layered security. As the clock struck 8:00 AM, election officials across 77 heavily guarded centres began unsealing the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to decide the fate of 293 constituencies. With exit polls projecting a fiercely tight, polarised battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), all eyes are glued to the initial trends expected to emerge within the next few hours.

The official counting of votes and declaration of results for the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections begins today, Monday, May 4, 2026, at 8:00 AM IST. While early trends are expected within the first few hours and the final outcome will be clear later in the day, the Falta Assembly constituency will be the sole exception. Due to a mandated repoll, counting for the Falta seat has been delayed and is scheduled to take place on May 24, 2026.

Votes are currently being counted at 77 centres across the state with very tight security. Police, cameras and officials are watching closely to make sure everything is fair. Results will come out today for 293 out of the 294 seats, since the election in Falta was delayed. 

The Bhawanipur constituency serves as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s traditional stronghold, a seat the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has firmly dominated since 2011. Having secured consecutive victories here, including critical by-elections in 2011 and 2021, along with the 2016 polls. Mamta Banrjee now faces a fierce challenge from her former confidant turned senior BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari.

The Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district will not see a declared winner today. The Election Commission has mandated a complete repoll for the seat following serious allegations of voter intimidation, unauthorised entry into polling booths, and potential vote tampering. To guarantee a fair and transparent democratic process, the fresh election will be conducted under heavy security on May 21, with the official vote counting scheduled for May 24. The key candidates contesting this seat include Jahangir Khan from the TMC, Debangshu Panda from the BJP, Abdur Razzak Molla from the Congress, and Sambhu Nath Kurmi from the CPI(M).

Exit polls for the intensely contested West Bengal elections have thrown up sharply divergent projections, reflecting a fiercely fought battle for the 294-member Assembly. A few surveys point to a comfortable retention of power for the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), with People’s Pulse projecting 177–187 seats for the TMC and 95–110 for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Janmat forecasting a sweeping 195–205 seats for the TMC against the BJP alliance's 80–90. However, the majority of pollsters give the BJP a distinct edge to cross the majority mark of 148. Matrize estimates 146–161 seats for the BJP and 125–140 for the TMC, while P-Marq projects 150–175 for the BJP and 118–138 for the TMC. Similarly, Poll Diary forecasts 142–171 seats for the BJP and 99–127 for the TMC, and Praja Poll predicts a massive 178–208 seats for the BJP against the TMC's 85–110. 

Following a record turnout of over 92%, the highest since Independence ballots from 293 constituencies will be tallied across 77 centers under a strict security grid starting at 8 a.m. Polls in the Falta constituency were countermanded due to reported electoral irregularities, with fresh voting and counting scheduled later in May.
