QS University Rankings 2026 By Subject: Check The World’s Best Universities Across 55 Subjects

QS University Rankings 2026: The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2026 by Subject features over 1,900 institutions and 55 subjects across five broad subject areas. More than 300 new institutions have ranked in this year’s QS rankings. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States retained its top spot for the 15th consecutive year with a score of perfect 100 in factors like academic reputation, Employer reputation, faculty student ratio. The QS ranking framework uses these factors to determine an institution’s global ranking. 

Southern Asia saw the highest percentage of improved universities since last year, while East Asia provides the most new entrants. 

Top Universities By Subject As Per QS University Rankings 2026

1. Arts and Humanities

Arts and Humanities includes subjects like history, modern languages, Theology, Divinity, Religious Studies, Philosophy and performing arts. The University of Oxford tops the university rankings for Arts and Humanities subjects, followed by Harvard University and University of Cambridge for second and third positions.

2. Engineering and Technology 

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranks as the best university in the world as per 2026 QS University rankings for engineering & technology, a broader subject area that covers subjects like Engineering and Technology subjects cover Engineering (Chemical), Engineering (Civil and Structure), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Other top universities for engineering & technology include Stanford University and ETH Zurich.

3. Life Sciences and Medicine

Harvard University is the top university in the world for the life sciences & medicine subject area this year. Life Sciences and Medicine subject area covers several subjects including medicine, nursing, psychology and veterinary science. Harvard University ranks as the top university for this subject area. Other top universities this year include the University of Oxford and Johns Hopkins University.

4. Natural Sciences

Natural Sciences subject area includes subjects like chemistry, geography and mathematics among others. Harvard University is ranked as the best university in the world by QS University Rankings 2026.

5. Social Sciences and Management
