IIT Mandi: Director Aims for 350+ Faculty and 5,000 Students by 2027 to Boost JEE Main Aspirants Prospects

IIT Mandi: In a significant move towards scaling academic excellence and infrastructure, the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Mandi, has set its sights on a massive expansion phase over the next three years. Speaking at the institute’s 17th Foundation Day celebrations on Monday, the Director Professor Laxmidhar Behera, announced that the premier engineering destination aims to increase its student strength to over 5,000 and bolster its academic core with more than 350 faculty members by the year 2027.

The strategic growth is designed to accommodate the increasing number of high-performing students entering through JEE Main and JEE Advanced while ensuring that the quality of technical education remains uncompromised. Professor Behera underscored that the institute’s primary mission during this growth spurt will be to offer every student seamless access to world-class laboratories and cutting-edge research facilities, positioning IIT Mandi as a frontrunner in the global rankings of technical universities.

Strengthening Research and Academic Infrastructure for the 2027 Vision

The vision of IIT Mandi 2027 involves not just a numerical increase in the campus population but a holistic upgrade of the institute’s ecosystem. According to the Director, the recruitment of new faculty members will focus on bringing in diverse expertise to support advanced research and interdisciplinary learning.

The Foundation Day event saw participation from distinguished leaders in the tech and academic sectors, including Infosys Co-Founder Senapathy ‘Kris’ Gopalakrishnan, who lauded the institute for achieving prestigious accolades in a remarkably short period. Future batches of BTech and MTech students are expected to benefit from the planned expansion, which will offer a greater variety of specialised courses and a stronger mentorship ratio. IIT Mandi's intention to house 5,000 students is a promising development for engineering aspirants countrywide, offering more options within the exclusive IIT system as the competition for places through the JoSAA counselling procedure gets more intense every year.

With a number of international experts offering their perspectives on how IIT Mandi may continue to reach new heights in the upcoming years, the institute also reiterated its dedication to sustaining its leadership in robotics and sustainable technology.
