Who is Min Aung Hlaing?

Min Aung Hlaing born in Dawei, southern Myanmar on July 3, 1956.  Min Aung Hlaing studied law for two years before entering Defence Services Academy (DSA) on his third attempt in 1974.

His steady climb through the military ranks and came closer to the Senior General Than Shwe, Myanmar’s long-standing strongman dictator. In 2011, as Than Shwe prepared to transition the country toward a military-drafted constitutional democracy, he bypassed more senior officers to appoint Min Aung Hlaing as the Commander-in-Chief of the Tatmadaw (Myanmar's armed forces).

Under the 2008 Constitution, the military ensured it retained immense political collateral, including a guaranteed 25% of all legislative seats (giving them an absolute veto over constitutional amendments) and direct control over the three most powerful ministries such as Home Affairs, Border Affairs, and Defence.

In the 2015 and 2020 elections Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) made a landslide democratic victory but tension simmered beneath the surface. In February, 2021 the power struggle between the democratic government and Min Aung Hlaing culminated  when Min Aung Hlaing arrested civilian leaders, alleged widespread voter fraud, and declared a state of emergency and forced coup in Myanmar and became president of Myanmar in 2026.

The junta facilitated a parliamentary election after implementing highly restrictive electoral laws that sidelined the opposition following a landslide victory for the military-aligned Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP). The Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Myanmar's legislature) officially elected U Min Aung Hlaing as the President of Myanmar. He assumed the presidency handing over active command of the military to General Ye Win Oo.

Although Western nations and exiled pro-democracy groups dismiss this political shift as a superficial rebranding of authoritarian rule, it forms the basis of Naypyidaw's current legal framework.
