Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp have been the core of social media. From sending reels to your friends to messages on WhatsApp, the core of networking. The apps were once totally free to use. However, now, that's changing. The American tech giant Meta that owns all three apps, has officially launched paid subscription plans for its apps. Let’s find out the new subscription model of Meta and how it will impact users.

What is Meta Plus?

Meta has introduced its “Plus” plans for its three major apps. The announcement was made by Naomi Gleit, Head of Meta, on her Instagram account.  Here is a quick look at the pricing:

  • Instagram Plus: $3.99 per month

  • Facebook Plus: $3.99 per month

  • WhatsApp Plus: $2.99 per month

Subscribers get extra features that regular users do not. Basically, the majority of these features will be based on personalisation. There is no specific date for the release of this subscription model.

What is Meta One?

Meta is going the extra mile. The company unveiled a wider subscription brand known as Meta One that will house all of its subscription programs, under a single umbrella.

Meta One has launched two plans for MetaAI: Meta One Plus $7.99/month and Meta One Premium $19.99/month, both with AI focus and being tested by the company.

The Premium plan provides a user with greater reasoning capabilities and more AI-powered image and video creating functionality throughout Meta applications.

Meta is also testing two plans that use a monthly subscription of $14.99 for creators and businesses called ‘Meta One Essential' and a monthly subscription of $49.99 called ‘Meta One Advanced'.

The plans offer verified badges, increased searchability on Instagram and Facebook, more insightful analytics, and features to help attract a larger audience at a quicker pace.

The AI plans will initially launch in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia. Similarly, the creator plans will be launched initially in markets including Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh.

Will Meta Launch Meta Plus and Meta One in India?

India is a key market for Meta, globally. Millions of WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook users make India a must-engage market for any company launching a global product.

At this time, these Plus subscriptions are reportedly still rolling out and undergoing testing on a limited basis worldwide, with Meta rolling them out in phases in select markets first. India is not a part of the first wave.

There is a very strong example of Meta service that is customised for India. Meta Verified is currently available in India for businesses on Instagram and Facebook and the plans cost around ₹639. This price is customised for India as in the USA, the same service is being offered for more than $11.

This is indicative of Meta's willingness to localise its pricing in India, and this would presumably be the case with the more recent plans. This price is likely to be localized in the Indian market with no confirmation of precise amounts in rupees by the company as of late May 2026.

That localisation will be the deciding factor. A monthly subscription may be too pricey, especially at the dollar price point.

One thing is for certain that the Meta One Advanced plan's enhanced reach, verified badges, and analytics could prove to be a worthwhile investment for Indian content creators and small business owners reliant on Instagram and Facebook for their livelihoods, but the pricing needs to be manageable.

Will Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp Become Paid Apps?

The answer is ‘No’. Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp aren't going anywhere behind a paywall. All features that you're using today, such as scrolling the feed, chatting with friends, posting Reels, making calls, will still be entirely free.

Meta won't take anything away from you. The paid plans are simply add-ons. The paid versions will only help you make certain customisations that you like. One platform that is currently running on this model is Snapchat which offers Snapchat+ options starting from $3.99 to $14.99 in the USA and ₹40 for India.

Why is Meta Doing This?

Meta makes the majority of its revenue from advertising. These platforms have now reached all over the world. In India itself, WhatsApp has more than 500 million users. The opportunity to expand via new users is small. Thus, Meta is seeking to monetize more from already existing users with premium features.

The new subscription plan is a major evolution in the social media company's approach to revenue. The free Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp are not going anywhere, but one thing is clear: if you want more, then there is a fee for it.
