Indian currency is quite fascinating. It comes in different colours and on the backside of these currency notes, there are different monuments printed. Each denomination has a different monument and it looks beautiful as well as shows the history of the nation.

Have you ever looked closely at a ₹500 note? In the front there is Mahatma Gandhi but on the back there is a very famous Indian monument that is located in Delhi. Let’s find out which monument is printed on the 500 rupee note.

What is At the Back of the 500 Rupee Note?

The backside of a 500 rupee note shows the Red Fort located in Old Delhi. The colour of the note is stone grey and the backside shows the monument with the Indian National Flag.

The left side of the note shows the year of printing of the note which is followed by the Swachh Bharat logo with slogan. After that one will see the language panel in the center and the Red Fort image is after that.

This design was introduced after the 2016 demonetisation when old ₹500 and ₹1000 were banned by the Indian Government.

Who Built the Red Fort?

The Red Fort in Delhi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it was built by Shah Jahan. It was built as the palace fort for Shahjahanabad. The fort is spread across 255 acres and is known for its red sandstone walls, along with the historic Salimgarh Fort.

The fort was completed in the year 1648 and was the main residence of Mughal emperors for nearly 200 years.

Why is the Red Fort Important for India?

Red Fort which is also popularly known as Lal Quila is quite important for India as it serves as a symbol of architectural brilliance and power. This fort is seen as a symbol of India's freedom as it played a crucial role during India’s independence struggle.

The fort served as the headquarters during the 1857 Revolt of India and it was taken over by the Britishers who overthrew the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar.

One of the most important reasons is that Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the National Flag of India at the Red Fort after the country got its independence in 1947.

Since then, the Indian National Flag is hoisted from Red Fort every year on 15th August which is the country’s Independence Day.
