What is the History of France?
In fact, France is the place where early hominy ancestors first settled almost two million years ago. Neanderthals originated there by 300,000 B.C. and Cro-Magnons came by 40,000 B.C.
Celtic tribes later migrated to the area and when the Romans conquered it in the second century B.C., they called it Gaul. Full Roman control of Gaul in 51 B.C. by Julius Caesar, and Rome was in decline by 400 A.D. Gaul was invaded by neighbouring tribes such as the Visigoths, Vandals and the Germanic Franks, from whom France is derived. A treaty established the kingdom of West Francia (or France) in 843.
In the next 1,000 years West Francia was governed by a succession of powerful kings. There were a number of wars over who would rule France such as the Hundred Years War from 1337 to 1453. In 1789, a time of violent changes, known as the French Revolution, started, which ultimately led to the overthrow of the monarchy.
In Paris, the Arc de Triomphe is dedicated to commemorating French soldiers who died or fought for the country during the Napoleonic Wars and French Revolution.
In 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte, a general in the French Revolution, made himself leader of France. He began a campaign of wars with neighbouring countries, and built a large French empire that ruled over much of continental Europe. However, the French supremacy in Europe ended in 1815, when Napoleon was soundly defeated in the battle of Waterloo.
France was to have its own share of devastation in World War I and World War II. It has since emerged, though, as an important and prosperous world power.
What is the geographical landscape of France?
France, the largest country in Western Europe, has long served as a bridge between the north and the south of the continent. Its long frontiers border on Germany and Belgium to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the West and the Pyrenees Mountains and Spain to the South.
France is the heart of agriculture in Europe, with wide fertile plains dominating most of the north and west. France's southern interior is taken up by the Massif Central, a plateau of ancient mountains and extinct volcanoes, covered in forests.
