Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan reviews the draft National Mental health and well being policy for schools. Read the article to know how this policy will strengthen student mental health support, counselling and safe school environment.
India may soon get a dedicated national policy focused on mental health and well being in schools. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently chaired a review meeting on the draft National Mental Health and Well Being Policy for schools and stressed the need for a holistic and preventive approach across the education system. The proposed policy is expected to support students, teachers and wider school community by creating a healthier and more supportive learning environment. With growing attention on stress, emotional pressure and student well being this move is seen an important step in improving the quality of education in India.
The meeting was attended by many officials, committee members and domain experts. Discussions focus on building a stronger system that supports mental wellness not only through counselling but also through school culture, teaching practices and early support mechanisms. Officials have also indicated that the draft policy may be placed in the public domain very soon with a possible release expected in the first week of June.
Focus on Safe, Inclusive and Supportive School Environments
During the review meeting Dharmendra Pradha highlighted the importance of creating schools that are safe, inclusive and emotionally supportive. He also underlined that mental health should not be treated as a separate issue but should become an integral part of the school system and quality education framework. According to discussion schools should build a positive culture that encourages empathy, care, trust, emotional resilience and a sense of belonging among students.
Now this approach is important because mental well being affects how students learn, behave and grow. A supportive school environment can help children manage stress better and seek help early when needed. The proposed policy is expected to strengthen mental health support systems in schools including counselling services and the early identification of stress among students. This could help schools respond in a more timely and sensitive way to student concerns.

Teachers, Families and Indian Values May Play a Key Role
Another key point discussed during the meeting was the role of teachers as the first level of mentors for students. The minister said the policy should be practical and easy to implement while also drawing from Indian Knowledge Systems and culture. This suggests that the final framework may combine modern mental health support with values rooted in India’s social and cultural traditions.
Officials have also pointed out that a child’s mental health is shaped not only by what happens in school but also by the home environment. Because of this, the policy is likely to encourage stronger coordination between schools, teachers and parents. Regular review of a child’s academic and overall development may become an important part of the larger well-being framework.
If released soon as expected, the National School Mental Health Policy could become a major step toward making Indian schools more caring, balanced, and responsive to the emotional needs of children. It may also help shift the education system towards a more humane and student-centred model.
