India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing higher education systems in the world, according to the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. The country has recorded a sharp increase in both the number of participating institutions and specific subject entries, signalling a period of rapid academic expansion and diversification.
QS World University Rankings By Subject 2026: IITs and IIMs Lead India’s Global Rise
The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT, Bombay, remains India’s top performer, featuring in 30 different subject rankings. It is closely followed by IIT Kharagpur and the University of Delhi. One important highlight of this year’s data is the dominance of STEM subjects. Engineering and Technology entries have grown by 65% over the last five years, with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi both securing spots in the global top 50 for various engineering disciplines.

Beyond the technical fields, Indian management institutes are also making their mark. IIM Ahmedabad notably debuted in the global top 25 for Marketing, ranking 21st, a first for any Indian business school in this category. Furthermore, the country saw a significant boost in Computer Science, with six institutions now placing in the global top 100.

Despite these gains, the rankings highlight a disparity between disciplines. While Science, technology. Engineering and Mathematics, STEM, continue to rise. While the Arts and Humanities sector remains a weak spot, with several entries seeing a decline. This progress places India ahead of major peers like the UK and the UAE in terms of improvement rates.
