In a unique move to blend ancient wisdom with modern scientific inquiry, the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT, Madras, has established the Centre for Advanced Research on Spirituality Science, and Society, CARSSS. This interdisciplinary initiative aims to study the impact of spirituality and meditation on human consciousness and their broader implications for society.
Focus on Well-Being and Interdisciplinary Research
The primary objective of the centre is to bridge the gap between diverse domains such as the humanities, medicine, architecture, and science. By applying rigorous scientific methods to concepts like meditation and spiritual practices, the institute hopes to generate research-backed insights into mental health and behavioural studies.

The centre’s launch is particularly timely as educational institutions globally place a higher premium on student wellness. IIT Madras has stated that this initiative aligns with its ongoing efforts to support student mental health through structured academic interventions. Beyond pure research, the centre will also focus on developing educational programs and public engagement initiatives to develop community development and personal well-being.
Support From Alumni and Global Vision
The establishment of the centre was made possible through a generous contribution of Rs. 5 crore from Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, a distinguished alumnus of the 1967 batch. An electrical engineer by training, he is the head of the Science of Spirituality, Sawan Kirpal Ruhani Mission, an organisation dedicated to meditation and inner peace.
IIT Madras aspires to use its world-class technology infrastructure to investigate how spirituality might be integrated into daily life to improve societal outcomes. The centre is planned to become a gathering place for scholars and researchers interested in the science of consciousness, establishing the institute as a leader in holistic education and research.
