Who is the Founder of OnePlus?

On 16 December 2013, OnePlus was started by two people, Pete Lau and Carl Pei. They both earlier worked together at the Chinese Electronics company Oppo and decided to start their own venture.

The OnePlus Community website mentions: “OnePlus is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer that was founded in December 2013 by former Oppo Vice President Pete Lau and co-founder Carl Pei. The company's goal was to create high-quality smartphones that were affordable and offered an excellent user experience.”

OnePlus' primary face is Pete Lau. His birth name was Liu Zuohu and he was born on 5th May 1975 in Hanchuan, China. He attended Zhejiang University and then went to Oppo to become a hardware engineer. Gradually, he was promoted to the position of the Vice President of Oppo. He stepped down in November 2013 and founded OnePlus a month later.

Carl Pei was born in Beijing, 1989 and raised in Sweden. He was among OnePlus' co-founders and for many years and served as its global face. He handled the design and marketing of the OnePlus products. Carl Pei left OnePlus in October 2020 and went on to start his own brand, which is called "Nothing". What Was the Idea Behind OnePlus?

Pete Lau's main objective was to create a quality smartphone without a high price tag. He felt that people should "Never Settle" for less, and that became the brand's tag line.

At the time when OnePlus was founded, it only had 6 workers. The first phone was the OnePlus One, which was released in 2014. It gave the highest specification for nearly 50% less price compared to other flagship phones. In less than a year, almost a million pieces were sold.

Who Currently Owns OnePlus?

Nowadays, OnePlus is owned by OPPO, which, in turn, is a part of BBK Electronics Corporation. OnePlus and OPPO started the merger of their activities in 2021 and ever since, they share the same research teams, software, and even some of the phone designs. Pete Lau was also appointed to a senior position at OPPO alongside his role as OnePlus' head.
