What is NITI Aayog?

NITI Aayog is the  policy think tank of the Government of India. It provides the directional and policy inputs that drive the nation's growth. It operates on the principle of "Bottom-Up" planning rather than the traditional "Top-Down" approach.

The Structure of NITI Aayog:

  • Chairperson: The Prime Minister of India ( currently PM Narendra Modi)

  • Vice Chairperson: Appointed by the PM (currently Dr. Ashok Kumar Lahiri).

  • Governing Council: Comprises the Chief Ministers of all States and Lt. Governors of Union Territories.

  • Full-time Members: Experts in various fields like economics, science, and agriculture.

NITI Aayog functions as a bridge between the Central and State governments, fostering a spirit of Cooperative Federalism. Its work can be broken down into four main pillars:

  • Design Policy and Programme Framework: It creates strategic, long-term policy frameworks and monitors their progress and NITI Aayog drafts the blueprints.
  • Cooperative Federalism: it provides a platform for structured support and partnership with State Governments by creating competitive benchmarks like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) India Index to encourage states to improve their performance in health, education, and infrastructure and promote Cooperative Federalism within the country.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: It acts as a watchdog for government schemes. By using data-driven tools, it evaluates the efficiency of various ministries and suggests course corrections to ensure that taxpayer money is being spent effectively.
  • Think Tank and Knowledge Hub: It maintains a repository of best practices and research by collaborating with international experts, academic institutions, and the private sector.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Lahiri has been appointed as the new Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog in 2026, succeeding Suman K. Bery, bringing his extensive economic and policy experience to India's reform journey. He will lead the policy think tank with a three-pronged approach focusing on clear policies, public welfare, and transparent implementation.
