The Calangute beach is given the title of “queen of the beaches”. It is located in North Goa and it is also one the largest beaches in the entire state. It is 7 kilometers long and is just 15 kilometers away from Panaji which is the capital of Goa. 

Why is Calangute Beach Called the Queen of Beaches? 

This title is earned by this beach due to its long history. The name Calangute comes from the Konkani word Koli-gutti, which means land of fishermen. This beach served as an important hub for fishermen during Portuguese rule. It was a major hub for agriculture and coconut, rice, and cashew plantations dominated the area. 

The beach saw a tourism surge in the 1980s when the word spread about the peace of Goa beaches and it got highly commercialized. By the 1980s and 1990s, hotels, restaurants, and markets had come up all along the coastline and it became a major tourist hub. Today it attracts millions of tourists and is popularly called the queen of beaches.

  • As of the 2011 Census, Calangute had a population of 13,810. 

  • Calangute is the longest beach in North Goa. 

  • Portuguese in the 17th century built Fort Aguada near the beach as a barrier against Dutch and Maratha invasions. 

  • The St. Alex Church in Calangute was first built with just palm leaves. 

  • Calangute Beach is believed to be associated with the Mauryan Empire around 2000 years ago. 

  • The Calangute Beach empties into the Arabian Sea.
