The Iron Pillar of Delhi is regarded as one of the oldest monuments in Delhi. This monument is situated within the premises of the famous monument known as Qutub Minar in Mehrauli, South Delhi

The Iron Pillar of Delhi was erected during the rule of King Chandragupta II, also known as Vikramaditya, and he ruled the Gupta Empire during the fourth and fifth centuries AD.

Thus, this pillar is more than 1,600 years old.The height of this pillar is estimated to be 7.21 meters, and its weight is almost 6 metric tonnes. Iron Pillar is composed of 98% pure iron, which is quite fascinating for an artifact created such a long time ago.

However, it is more astonishing to know that this pillar has still not corroded despite its age. This is surprising to many researchers and scientists from around the world.

The Iron Pillar of Delhi is not simply a monument but also stands for the advanced ancient science of India.

Interesting Facts About Qutub Minar

Here are some interesting facts about the Qutub Minar, which has many unique qualities, as follows:

  • Qutub Minar has a height of 72.5 meters, and it is considered the tallest brick minaret in the world. There are 379 steps inside the tower that take you to its peak. The construction of the tower was done in the 12th and 13th centuries by Qutb ud-Din Aibak.

  • Qutub Minar has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. This tower attracts the largest number of visitors to India. Yearly, millions of local and international visitors visit this impressive historical building in Delhi.

  • The construction of Qutub Minar did not involve the efforts of a single ruler. It was originally constructed by Qutb ud-Din Aibak and then completed by Iltutmish. After this, some more work was done on it by Firoz Shah Tughlaq.

  • Qutub Minar is constructed using red sandstone and marble. The walls of the minaret have been beautifully carved out with artistic motifs and verses from the Holy Quran. The design of the minaret varies from one level to another, which makes the monument unique in nature.

  • Similar to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Qutub Minar also leans towards one side. This minaret has a lean of about 65 cm from its vertical position. This leaning tendency has come into existence due to various natural reasons that have affected the structure over many years.

  • Until recently, tourists were allowed to visit the topmost level of Qutub Minar. But after a tragic accident that occurred in 1981, the Government of India has permanently prohibited access to the interior of the minaret.

Conclusion

Delhi is a city that is steeped in history, from the Iron Pillar to the majestic Qutub Minar; each monument represents a tale of India's golden era.

They are not only architectural monuments but also became a symbol of great architecture, culture, and scientific knowledge. It is our responsibility to safeguard such monuments for future generations.
