Monotremes are a class of mammals that are known as egg laying mammals; they are a special group of mammals that lactate to feed their young but lay eggs rather than give birth to live babies. The duck-billed platypus and four species of echidnas are the five examples of the egg laying mammals in the world.

These mammals are only found in Australia and New Guinea. They are an ancient lineage in the animal kingdom and have a combination of physical characteristics and behaviors commonly found in mammals, birds, and reptiles.

Which Mammals Can Lay Eggs?

There are only 5 living mammals that lay eggs, and the complete list is as follows:

1. Duck-billed Platypus

2. Short-beaked Echidna

3. Sir David's Long-beaked Echidna

4. Eastern Long-beaked Echidna

5. Western Long-beaked Echidna

The platypus is a semi-aquatic animal with a duck-like bill and a beaver-like tail, the echidnas inhabit the land and are full of sharp spines which resemble porcupines or hedgehogs to a great extent.

How Egg Laying Mammals Function?

Monotremes are true mammals since they possess hair, are warm-blooded and that they suckle their young. Nevertheless, their internal structure and reproduction system are entirely unlike those of the placental mammals such as humans, dogs or whales.

As opposed to a lengthy gestation in a womb, female monotremes lay little, soft, leathery eggs. When the eggs are incubated by the mother of ten or fourteen days, small hairless babies are born. Due to monotremes' lack of ordinary nipples, the mother releases the milk by sweating on her milk patches on the skin, and the babies lap up this milk.

The Importance of Egg Laying Mammals

Monotremes offer a window on evolutionary history. Through their study, scientists will be able to learn how the first mammals betrayed their reptilian predecessors millions of years ago. They have a combination of genetic characteristics enabling biologists to assemble the evolutionary puzzle of how the mammalian immune, reproductive, and nervous system evolved through the ages.

Monotremes offer a unique perspective as they are the only mammals that exhibit egg laying tendencies. Scientists study these mammals to identify how the mammals evolved from reptilian predecessors millions of years ago.

The genetic characteristics of these mammals makes them an interesting area of study for biologists in identifying how the mammalian immune system, reproductive system and nervous system has evolved through the ages.

Interesting Facts about Egg Laying Mammals

1. Duck-billed platypus males have sharp-spined venomous spurs on their hind legs which are used to compete with other males during the mating season.

2. The monotremes lack a stomach. Their food goes directly to the intestines via the esophagus.

3. Echidna and the platypus are both electroreceptive. It implies that they are able to detect the low electrical impulses emitted by the body movements of their prey, which allows them to hunt in the dark water or deep soil.

4. Echidnas are also known as "spiny anteaters" since they use their extremely long and sticky tongues to prey and feast on thousands of ants and termites and also because they have spines sticking like a porcupine.
