Kalinjar Hill Declared National Geo-Heritage Site: Check Here

Last Updated: Mar 19, 2026, 19:09 IST

The designation of the Kalinjar hill area as Uttar Pradesh’s first National Geo-Heritage Site on March 16, 2026, marks a sophisticated convergence of geological science and ancient history. Centered around the "Eparchaean Unconformity" where 2.5 billion-year-old granite meets billion-year-old sandstone the site offers a rare physical window into Earth's crustal evolution.

Kalinjar hill area around the Kalinjar Fort in Banda district, Uttar Pradesh has been proclaimed as a National Geo -Heritage Site. This was announced by the Geological Survey of India on 16 March 2026. It is the pioneer geo-heritage site that is officially designated in Uttar Pradesh.

This title demonstrates that the location is significant not only in terms of science but also in terms of history and religion. It must also assist in increasing geo-tourism and conservation in Bundelkhand.

Why is Kalinjar a Geo-Heritage Site?

The first geologic structure is an Eparchaean Unconformity. This is a 2.5 billion-year-old granite that is overlaid by a 1.2 billion-year-old sandstone. Unconformities are infrequent points whereby there is an extended separation in the earth layers.

Another already a National Geo -Heritage Monument is the Tirupati Eparchaean Unconformity in Andhra Pradesh.

By designating Kalinjar as such that GSI desires to study, teach, and visit. It prevents uncontrolled quarrying and uncontrolled construction as well.

What is the Geo Cultural Meaning of the Hill and Fort?

The Kalinjar Fort is located on a plateau on the steep and rocky terrain in the Vindhya range. It is strong because of hard granite and ridges of sand stones. The fort walls were constructed using the same rock which indicates a strong connection between natural rocks and the military construction by humans.

The name of the National Geo -Heritage Site is not only the monument, but rather the area around the fort. This will offer safeguarding to the entire landscape, the rock faces, and the constructed heritage all in one.

It was part of the Chedi kingdom, Mauryan and Gupta empires, and Chandelas, Mughals and Marathas. That indicates that it was a political and military centre since centuries. The hill is located on Neelkanth Mahadev temple which is situated religiously. As per the story of Samudra Manthan, hence, Lord Shiva drank the poison that was capable of killing him and had his throat turning blue. The combination of religious narratives, pilgrimage, and the military history makes Kalinjar more than a heritage site, which is only composed of rocks.

Tourism, Conservation and Regional Impact

The GSI will install signs and panels at the Kalinjar to describe the Eparchaean Unconformity, rock layers, and history of the fort to the visitors and students. To boost the newly-geo-heritage status, the Uttar Pradesh government has given a green light to a 12 crore rupees development project to transform Kalinjar Fort to a heritage-tourism site.

It is the hope of the officials that by connecting Kalinjar with Khajuraho and Chitrakoot, local tourism is going to enhance, and this will facilitate employment, handicrafts and hospitality. It will also provide stimulation of sustainable geo-tourism and good heritage management.
