Show Key Points
The Indian Institute of Science, IISc, Bengaluru, has launched a unique initiative to bring its century-long legacy to life through a comic book. Developed in partnership with the iconic storytelling brand Amar Chitra Katha, the illustrious edition aims to bridge the gap between the complex institutional history and the younger generations. The comic was officially launched on March 7, 2026, during the institute's popular ‘Open Day’.
A Narrative of Vision and Nation-Building
The newly launched comic book traces the remarkable journey of IISc from its conceptualisation by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata during the British colonial era. The comic also highlights the important roles played by the key figures, including the support of the Mysore royal family, which was instrumental in establishing the institute in 1911. By using the accessible and vivid medium of comics, the project seeks to inspire young readers with stories of pioneers who used science as a tool for self-reliance and national progress.
The development of this publication was a meticulous two-and-a-half-year process involving historians, archivists, and faculty members to ensure historical accuracy. This comic book will be available in English, Hindi, and Kannada, with a narrative that will emphasise IISc’s contributions to various fields of research and its impact on society.
Currently ranked as the top Indian university in global rankings, IISc intends for this collaboration to reclaim the narrative of Indian science, making ot engaging for audiences across the country through both physical copies and future digital distribution.
