GATE Final Answer Key 2026 Release Date

The GATE Final Answer Key 2026 will be released according to a systematic timetable that the IITs established over the past ten years. Candidates had three days (February 25–28) to challenge any discrepancies after the distribution of the provisional key on February 22.

Subject experts at IIT Guwahati will evaluate these challenges. If a challenge is found valid, the final answer key is updated, and the objection fee is refunded to the candidate. Based on previous cycles (like GATE 2020 or 2025), there is typically a 15 to 18-day gap between the closing of the objection window and the result declaration.

What is Difference Between the GATE Provisional and Final Answer Key?

It is important for candidates to understand that the difference between GATE Provisional Answer Key and GATE Final Answer Key 2026

Provisional Key: This is the first draft released by the IIT to invite feedback from candidates. It is subject to change based on valid proofs.

Final Key: This is the version released after expert verification. No further challenges are entertained once this is published. If any question is "dropped" or marks are awarded to all (MTA), it will be reflected here.

How to Calculate a Mark using the Final Answer Key?

Candidates can use the final key; candidates can calculate their raw marks out of 100. The marking scheme for GATE includes both positive and negative marking (for MCQs).

Total Marks = (Marks from Correct Answers) – (Negative Marks for Wrong MCQs)

Marking Details:

1-Mark MCQs: +1 for correct; -1/3 for incorrect.

2-Mark MCQs: +2 for correct; -2/3 for incorrect.

MSQs & NATs: No negative marking for incorrect answers.

What Happens After the Gate Final Answer Key?

After the Gate final key gets released, IITG will release the GATE 2026 Result on March 19, 2026. IIT Guwahati will announce the qualifying cut-off for each of the 30 papers. After the results, the scorecard will be available for download from March 27, 2026. Candidates can then use these scores for:

M.Tech Admissions: COAP (for IITs) and CCMT (for NITs/IIITs).

PSU Recruitment: Gate 2026 marks will be used for direct recruitment by organisations such as GAIL, NTPC, and NPCIL.
