Delhi University Colleges Provide Shelter and Food to Students After Satya Niketan PG Collapse
Delhi University colleges are providing food and shelter to students following a PG building collapse in Satya Niketan. Colleges have opened rooms to help displaced students.
Following the collapse of a PG building in South Delhi's Satya Niketan area, many Delhi University, DU colleges have suspended classes on Monday and converted classrooms into temporary shelters. Colleges arranged mattresses in health centers, staff rooms, and guest rooms to accommodate displaced students, along with food and other required support. The university administration directed colleges to check admission rolls, identify students living in affected areas, and offer campus accommodation. The nearby PGs were shut or sealed over building safety concerns, forcing many students to leave the area.
Campus Relief and Accommodation
To assist affected students and visiting families, Delhi University colleges set up helpline numbers and immediate relief facilities. Female students were allowed to seek shelter across any participating college campus, while male students were accommodated at their respective colleges after identity verification. Additionally, officials made the AICTE guest house available for visiting parents needing temporary accommodation.
- The Participating Colleges or Institutions include Sri Venkateswara, Motilal Nehru, Jesus and Mary, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma, Maitreyi, Ram Lal Anand, Bhagat Singh, and Aryabhatta College issued notices offering food and shelter.
- The Official reports indicated that 72 students, 46 boys and 26 girls stayed overnight at Sri Venkateswara College, while around 50 students stayed at Motilal Nehru College. Ram Lal Anand College arranged facilities for 50 students before they moved to alternate locations.
- College NCC units collected and distributed donations of water, food, and bedsheets at the collapse site. Student volunteers also assisted in locating classmates living in nearby accommodation.
Safety Actions, Casualties, and Student Demonstrations
The buildings next to the fallen PG were cleared out right away because they were not safe. The principal of Motilal Nehru College, Yogeshwar Sharma, said staff went to the hospital to look for missing students and mentioned that three students who died were thought to be from the college. The principal of Sri Venkateswara College, Vajala Ravi, said the old PG buildings in the area were dangerous and confirmed that staff stayed all night with students who had to leave their homes. The Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP) held a protest at Satya Niketan demanding rental compensation from DU due to hostel shortages
