India’s GDP grew by 7.8% in Q1 FY27 (April–June 2026), surpassing RBI and market forecasts. Explore key highlights, growth drivers, sector performance, and economic impacts
India's economy demonstrated an unexpected 7.8% growth rate in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during the April to June period of FY 2026-27, cementing a spot among the fastest-growing economies in the world according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
Real GDP in India increased at constant prices to ₹81.36 lakh crore compared to ₹75.46 lakh crore in the same quarter in the previous year, with the figures surpassing that proclaimed by the Reserve Bank of India (7%), despite global headwinds like the geopolitical spat in West Asia and the volatile energy landscape.
This positive and impressive result could be attributed to the rise in domestic consumption supported by investment, export, and significant performance of services and manufacturing industries. Significant contributors included financial sectors, IT, real estate, and professional services, while Gross Fixed Capital Formation achieved double-digit growth of 11.9%, which shows the momentum of the Indian economy.
Key Highlights of Q1 FY27 GDP Growth:
-
Real GDP expansion of 7.8%, surpassing central bank prediction of 7.0% and market expectations.
-
Nominal GDP Growth: The nominal GDP increased to ₹88.27 lakh crore, representing a growth rate of 10.3% over the previous fiscal year, compared to ₹80.00 lakh crore in Q1 FY26.
-
GVA: The real GVA rose by 8.2%, and that was beyond last year’s performance as a result of strong industrial production and service sector performance.
-
Higher Than Q1 FY26: The growth was more than 6.9% which characterized the April-June period.

Factors Contributing to Growth
The strong growth seen during the first quarter can be attributed to the following elements:
-
Strong Domestic Consumption: The Private Final Consumption Expenditure (PFCE) has experienced a strong performance across urban and rural areas, notwithstanding the inflation pressures on an international level.
-
Investment and Capital Expenditure: The Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) has recorded impressive double-digit growth bolstered by consistent input from the public sector into infrastructure projects and the recovery of the private capital investments.
-
Combination of Manufacturing and Service Sectors: The financial, real estate and professional services sector as well as the manufacturing sectors have greatly affected the overall Gross Value Added.
-
Reform Implementation: The simplified Goods and Services Tax (GST) procedures helped improve compliance with the current regulations and facilitated trade in domestic market.
What It Means for India’s Economy
1. GDP Data for Q1 FY27 Strengthens India’s Macroeconomic Position
2. Annual Growth Trajectory: The beginning of the year boost given by the GDP figures is useful for the country in the remaining part of FY27 enabling India to meet or exceed the expectations set for the economy at the beginning of the year.
3. Investors’ Confidence: Positive economic characteristics of India are stimulating foreign direct investment and capital inflow into Indian stock markets.
4. Policy Flexibility: India’s fiscal performance makes it possible for the Reserve Bank of India and its authorities to pursue the monetary policy aimed at curbing inflation without losing pace.
The services sector remained a key growth driver, thanks to finance, IT, real estate and business services. Manufacturing and construction continued to do well due to government spending on infrastructure and demand for products in local markets.
Agricultural sectors performed steadily, benefiting from good rainfall at the start of and middle of 2026.
