The world is changing constantly and that includes how we order food. Earlier people used to go to restaurants to place an order or call them through their pamphlets. Now everything can be done through a few simple taps on your devices.
This credit can be given to the minds who came up with the idea of food deliveries. One such brand is Swiggy that has captured the interest of the Indian market in a very small amount of time.
It is one of the most well known names in the country when it comes to ordering food online. From a student to a working professional, everyone has used Swiggy to order food.
But have you ever wondered who was the mind behind this platform? How did Swiggy start? Here is everything you need to know.
Who is the Founder of Swiggy?
Swiggy was formed by three friends, Sriharsha Majety, Nandan Reddy and Rahul Jaimini. Before coming up with the idea of Swiggy, two of them Sriharsha Majety and Nandan Reddy, had tried building a logistics setup which was called Bundl. These two studied together at BITS Pilani.
This business before Swiggy had limited scope and that is why they shifted the focus. Rahul Jaimini at that time was associated with Myntra serving as a senior software engineer and he later joined the two.
Swiggy first started with just 5 to 6 delivery partners and there were 15 to 20 restaurants that were associated with the brand in the Koramangala area.
The idea was simple as most of the restaurants at that time were delivering food in atleast one hour but Swiggy promised 30 minutes delivery and focused entirely on customer service.
That is how the brand grew all over India. It now operates in over 653 cities across India as per their FY 2023-24 report.
Who is the Current Owner of Swiggy?
While the brand started with three friends, Swiggy is not a private company anymore. Swiggy went public in the year 2024 and is now a public company which means people across India can easily buy its shares.
As per the 2024 data, Prosus which is a Dutch technology company is the biggest shareholder of Swiggy. It holds around 22% share of the company. Apart from this company, the three founders also hold a significant share in the company.
