But one question that troubles all the taxpayers is that what is the last date to fill ITR? Let us quickly check the last dates to fill ITR in India. Knowing the deadline helps people in ensuring that they file their ITR’s before being levied any penalty for late filing.

ITR Filing Last Dates FY 2025-26

The last date to file ITR for the FY 2025-26 for majority of taxpayers is 31st July 2026. But there are certain types of taxpayers whose last date of filing ITR is different from others. Let us check out the details below.

1. Taxpayers coming under the ITR-1 and ITR-2 bracket need to fill the ITR by 31st July 2026. These taxpayers are those who are filing tax for income generated from salary and capital gains.

2. For businesses that do not require auditing the ITR-3, and ITR-4 form needs to be filled for filing the returns. The last date for filing the ITR for such category of businesses is 31st August 2026.

3. Businesses that require extensive audit reports need to file the ITR-3 and ITR-4, and their last date for filing is 31st October 2026.

4. For businesses that deal extensively with international transactions or doing domestic transactions that exceed certain threshold, they need to file their tax returns by 30th November 2026.

Can I File ITR even after the due date has passed?

It is possible to file ITR even after the due date has passed. But there will be certain penalties associated with late returns. In case someone files a return after the due date, it is known as belated return.

The due date for filing belated return for FY 2025-26 is 31st December 2026. In case someone misses that date also, there is a provision for filing an ITR within 48 months from the end of the assessment year on which ITR was missed.

This translates to 31st March 2031 for filing any such returns that were missed by the taxpayer the above mentioned timelines for FY 2025-26.
