The IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026 took place on Monday June 29, 2026, in Washington D.C. It is the only independent not-for-profit institution dedicated to strengthen the U.S.-India partnership.

At the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026, one of the top diplomats and US Congressman Ro Khanna declared that the US-India relationship was at its lowest point in the last 30 years. He accused the US President of eroding the trust between US and India.

Khanna pointed directly to one sided aggressive decisions of America especially in the case of Iran which have disrupted global energy stability and directly spiked domestic gas prices in India.

In this article, read more about why Ro Khanna blamed Trump for the damaged ties at the USIPF Leadership Summit 2026 and the Counter-Perspective on the US-India Relationship.

Why does Ro Khanna Blame Trump for Damaged India-US Ties?

Khanna’s main reason for argument highlighted that Washington has completely abandoned its traditional moral vision to replace it with cooperative diplomacy that only favours those who have greater power.

Below are the reasons behind Ro Khanna claiming US and India relations reaching its lowest stage:

One-sided US military in Iran during the Israel vs Iran Conflict bypassed critical old allies directly impacting fuel prices in India leading to a huge spike.

Ro Khanna mentioned the recent meeting of Trump with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China as a loss of diplomatic trust.

He notes that the Indian ambassador clearly stated that a generation of trust has been lost due to White House decisions which were unpredictable.

He further added “And then the irrationality of the tariff war. I was in China and the Indian ambassador said to me, 'A generation of trust has been lost by this president of yours.' See, if we don't speak the truth about the damage that this president has done, not only at home but abroad, then we're just not living in reality,” backing his reason on the tariff war that highly impacts the foundational economic integration between Washington and New Delhi.

Counter-Perspective on the US-India Relationship

While Democrats project a clear picture other summit voices offered an opposite reality. Al Mason Honorary who is a Senior Advisor to the USISPF claimed that the bilateral dynamics are actually undergoing a stage of revival.

He credited Sergio Gor who is US Ambassador to India for bridging bureaucratic gaps and restoring communication between the two administrations.

According to Mason, Ambassador Gor conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the US deeply respects India’s growth and seeks a much stronger partnership.

Ultimately these clashing narratives show that Washington remains deeply divided over its South Asian strategy. While policymakers struggle to reconcile unilateral tariff decisions with strategic US India alliances, the next generation faces the monumental task of stabilizing bilateral cooperation and restoring deep structural trust on the global stage.
