Ushuaia is called by this name due to a number of reasons:

  • Extreme Southern Location: Ushuaia is near Antarctica. Further there are not even large cities, just large seas and cold countries.

  • Remote and Isolated: The city seems not to belong to the rest of the world. In the middle of mountains, forests, and sea, it seems to be the end of the world.

  • Gateway to Antarctica: Most of the journeys to the Antarctic begin in Ushuaia and therefore it is the contemporary destination before the southernmost continent.

The Plan South America mentions: “The city wears its nickname proudly: El fin del mundo (the end of the world). Set at the edge of the Beagle Channel, it’s closer to Antarctica than Buenos Aires; the White Continent lies just 1,000km away, making it the main departure point for polar expeditions.”

  • It is a major Antarctic departure point.

  • The place has a dedicated “end of the world train” that runs through Tierra del Fuego National Park which was originally used to transport wood from the prison.

  • Charles Darwin journeyed through Ushuaia on his research expeditions according to Discovery

  • It was founded by the British missionaries in 1870 but the President of Argentina at that time turned it into a penal colony for the most dangerous criminals.
