The Maharashtra government has announced a major relief for students from the Maratha community by extending to them several educational welfare schemes that are currently available to OBC students. The move comes after recent discussions between the state government and social activist Manoj Jarange Patil and is being seen as an important step to address long standing concerns raised during the Maratha reservation protests. With this decision, eligible Maratha students will now be able to access a wider range of scholarships, fee support and training benefits across the state.Read the detailed article to know more about details.
What the new decision means for Maratha students
The decision has been issued through a Government Resolution, making it official for implementation. Under this move, Maratha students will now be eligible for benefits similar to those offered to OBC students in education. These include the post-matric scholarship scheme, scholarships for students in primary, secondary and higher secondary classes, reimbursement of professional training fees, and support under multiple education assistance components. The list also includes benefits for students pursuing professional courses outside Maharashtra and support for students admitted at the institute level after the Centralised Admission Process.
The government has also directed departments to ensure that these schemes are extended to Maratha students studying in aided as well as unaided colleges. This means the support will not remain limited to only a few institutions and a larger number of students may benefit from the announcement.
Why this announcement is significant
This decision does not directly settle the larger issue of reservation in education and government jobs but it does provide immediate academic and financial support to students from the Maratha community. It expands access to scholarships, fee reimbursements, skill-based training and other concessions that can reduce the financial burden on families.
The announcement came shortly after Manoj Jarange Patil called off his fast and after the state government repeated that it remains committed to the Maratha reservation issue while also protecting the existing other backward class quota. For many students this new policy offers timely support and may improve access to higher education, professional courses and career-oriented training from the coming academic cycle.
