Who was Shyama Prasad Mukherjee?
Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was an Indian politician and educator. He was the youngest vice-chancellor of the University of Calcutta. He also served as a minister in India's first cabinet under Jawaharlal Nehru. He founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 which went on to become the first President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He spent his life building a united nation through education and politics. He was a national leader who died in police custody in 1953 because he opposed Article 370 of India's constitution. He was detained in Kashmir for his stance. This article turned out to give special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
What was Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s Contribution?
A significant role was played by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in India’s educational system, economy and national politics. As Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta from 1934 to 1938, he increased the availability of Indian language courses and advocated the expansion of higher education to Indian students.
As India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply from 1947-1950, he helped in India’s industrial expansion by creating very large public sector. He left the cabinet in 1950 for criticising the government when it came to the minorities and India’s relationship with Pakistan.
He started the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 creating an alternate major political platform for India. He became widely known after he led the campaign against Jammu and Kashmir’s permit system and his proposal to completely integrate Jammu and Kashmir into India. His arrest in Kashmir and death in 1953 helped him become a very prominent figure for this cause.
West Bengal Plans 125-Foot Statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee
A 125-foot statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee will be built in Kolkata, West Bengal. This statue marks his 125th birth anniversary.
