George Kurian: Union Cabinet Minister and Kerala BJP Leader Resigns
George Kurian resigned from the post of Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Ministry of Fisheries, Animals Husbandry and Dairying. He had to put in his resignation following the end of his tenure in Rajya Sabha.
George Kurian resigned from the Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs position after the end of his Rajya Sabha term on June 23,2026. He was not nominated again by the BJP in the latest Rajya Sabha elections.
President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation with immediate effect on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an official statement from the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
In addition to his responsibilities as Minister for Minority Affairs, Minister Kurian also served in the Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. At the time of his resignation, he was reportedly the only representative from the Christian community serving in the Union Government.
What Was George Kurian’s Role as Union Minister?
George Kurian as the Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Ministry of Fisheries, Animals Husbandry and Dairying wanted to deliver services through welfare and development programmes for both minority groups and fishing communities.
He initiated the launch of the Matsya Shakthi project under PM VIKAS which aimed at teaching how to raise fish and seaweed agriculture for the minority fisherfolk of Kerala. The Minister also promoted development in the northeastern states of India through local fish feed production, and establishing fish farmer associations.
Kurian launched the Marine Fisheries Census which implemented digital data collection of fish production to improve the planning of fisheries and its delivery of services to fishermen across India.Through these efforts, Kurian became a major figure in the fish farming industry majorly in Kerala.
Brief Glance at George Kurian’s Political Career
George Kurian's political career is closely associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP).He was born and brought up in Kerala and started his political career through student activism and became associated with the ideological network of the BJP.
He slowly rose up in the party ranks and was highly engaged in organizing works among the Christian communities. He held several positions in the BJP at the state and national levels over the years including National Secretary of the party.
In 2024, he entered Parliament as a Rajya Sabha member and was appointed Minister of State for Minority Affairs and for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. His tenure revolved around minority welfare and fisheries development within the underpriviledged.
Why Did George Kurian Resign?
George Kurian resigned because his tenure as a Member of Parliament came to an end. To continue serving as a Union Minister he needed to remain a Member of Parliament but his party BJP decided not to nominate him again for another Rajya Sabha term.
George Kurian officially stated in a Facebook Post, “I got the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and I submitted the resignation yesterday itself. Becoming a Union Minister was something I had never imagined, even in my dreams. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose me to become a minister, and I conveyed my gratitude to him. Today, I was informed that the President has accepted my resignation.”
He submitted his resignation from the Union Council of Ministers. President of India, Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation on the advice of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His term ended becuase he was not reselected for another tenure in simple terms.
