Program Tracks and Financial Benefits
The 2026 edition of the LOTUS, Long-Term Opportunity for Trainees and University Students, Program introduces a tiered approach to research collaboration:-

LOTUS Basic: Designed for a short-term status of up to 12 months, focusing on early-stage joint supervision and building foundational academic networks.

LOTUS-ASPIRE: A new, intensive track offering up to 36 months of residency. This track is geared toward producing high-level research outcomes and provides enhanced funding and regular progress evaluations.
Select candidates will receive a generous monthly stipend of approximately ₹1.4 lakh, covering living expenses and accommodation. While the program provides extensive support within Japan, including access to state-of-the-art laboratories and potential industry internships, travel costs from India are expected to be covered by the home institutions.
Eligibility Criteria and How to Apply
The program is open to affiliated researchers under the age of 40. Applicants cannot apply independently; instead, the application must be submitted by a Principal Investigator at the hosting Japanese institution. The deadline for applications is June 9, 2026, with final selections expected by late August. This program represents a landmark opportunity for Indian talent to gain international exposure while contributing to the global technological landscape.
