GMC Jammu Interns Strike: What Happened?
The MBBS interns at GMC Jammu had launched an indefinite strike over their demand for an increase in the monthly stipend. The protest was part of a wider agitation by medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir seeking better financial compensation and improved working conditions.
Reports said interns in the Union Territory were receiving around Rs 12,000 per month, while they have been demanding a substantial revision, with a demand of around Rs 30,000 per month. The interns had raised concerns over the disparity between their stipend and the compensation being provided to medical interns in several other states.
Government Assures Stipend Revision Within One Month
The strike has now been suspended following an assurance from J&K Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo that the stipend would be revised and enhanced within a month. The suspension of the agitation does not mean that the interns have withdrawn their demand. They are now expecting the government to take formal steps within the promised timeline.
