IIT Bombay Announces First US Sub-Campus with SUNY Old Westbury

IIT Bombay has announced its first campus outside India. The new campus will be opened in partnership with the State University of New York at Old Westbury on Long Island in New York. IIT Bombays First Expansion to the United States
The new campus will create more opportunities for education and research. IIT Bombay will help build the engineering education wing for SUNY Old Westbury. The partnership will begin with certificate courses in 2027. Later both institutions plan to start full degree programmes. These programmes will be open to students from different countries including India and the United States. The course will focus on science engineering physics and fast growing fields such as artificial intelligence. The letter of intent for this partnership was signed by IIT Bombay Director Prof Shireesh Kedare and SUNY Old Westbury President Dr. Timothy E Sams Consul General Binaya S Pradhan was also present during the signing ceremony.
Research Faculty Exchange and Academic Collaboration
Before the full degree programme begins both institutions will start working together though academic activities. Faculty members and researchers will visit each other's campuses and share their knowledge. They will also work together on research projects and organise conferences and other academic events.
These activities will help institutions build a strong academic foundation and create new opportunities in the future.Officials from both institutions thanked the Government of India along with the embassy and consulate General of India in New York for their support. They said this support played an important role in making the partnership possible.
Strong Support from Indian Leadership
The new partnership has received appreciation from many senior leaders. Ambassador Vinay Kwatra said this collaboration is an important step that will strengthen academic and technology ties between India and the United States. Higher education secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi said this partnership is an important milestone in the growing education relationship between the two countries. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also praised the partnership. He said this initiative follows the goals of National Education Policy 2020. He added that it will help Indian education reach more students around the world and build stronger ties between Indian Institutions and leading universities in other countries.
