Who is the Founder of Nestle?

Henri Nestle was born in Frankfurt, Germany on 10 August 1814. He was originally named Heinrich Nestle. After moving to the French-speaking town of Vevey in Switzerland, he changed his name to Henri Nestle to better fit into local society.

The Nestle mentions: “The Nestle family originally came from Sulz on the Neckar in Württemberg, Germany. Most of Heinrich Nestle’s forebears were glaziers. In the local parish registers the name is written in a variety of ways – Nästlin, Nästlen, Nestlin and Nestlen. It was not until Heinrich’s grandfather Johann Ulrich (1728–1816) moved to Frankfurt am Main in 1755 that “Nestle” (“little nest”) became the accepted family spelling. After settling in Switzerland, Heinrich gave the name a French accent, writing it as Nestlé, the form henceforth used in Switzerland, and changed Heinrich into Henri.”

Henri Nestle started his career as a pharmacist's assistant. He was concerned with the number of infant fatalities in the late 1860s, and used his scientific expertise to develop an infant formula. This product was named Farine Lactee. It was a baby food consisting of cow's milk, wheat flour and sugar.

The product was quite successful. It got around quickly and Nestle was flooded with orders. In 1868, only 8,600 tins were made. By 1875, more than a million tins were being sold.

The Nestle website mentions: “Henri Nestlé started as a pharmacist's apprentice. In the late 1860s, troubled by the high infant death rate, he used his scientific knowledge to create an infant formula. By the time he was 60, the Nestlé company was an international success. And his milk-based baby food, Farine Lactée, was being sold across five continents.”
