There is a city in India in which festivals aren't just something ordinary. The streets of this city are always filled with processions, prayers, music and colour. A city in which devotion isn't simply an emotion, it's a lifestyle. That is why when it comes to the title of City of Festivals then the answer will take you to the southern part of our country.

Which Place is Known As the City of Festivals?

Madurai, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India is known as the City of Festivals. It is located on the banks of the Vaigai river and boasts of a history of over 2500 years.

Not only is Madurai an old city, but it is one of the oldest cities in the world to be continuously occupied. It was the capital of the great Pandya dynasty and the hub of the famous Sangam period during which some of the greatest literature and poetry in Tamil were written.

Now the city is also called Thoonga Nagaram which translates to "the city that never sleeps. But when you realise the number of festivals this city celebrates throughout the year, this name will make perfect sense.

The Madurai District website mentions: “Madurai has a rich historical background in the sense that Lord Shiva himself performed sixty-four wonders called “Thiruvilaiyadals”. As early as the 3rd century BC, Megasthanes visited Madurai. Later many people from Rome and Greece visited Madurai and established trade with the Pandya kings. Madurai flourished till 10th century AD when it was captured by Cholas the arch rivals of the Pandyas.”

Why is Madurai Called the City of Festivals?

Simply put, the city of Madurai celebrates festivals almost every month of the year. The legendary Meenakshi Amman Temple of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar is at the core of all these festivities.

This temple is the cultural and spiritual power of the whole city. Most of the major festivals held in Madurai start or revolve around this temple. The festivities also highlight the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu, such as classical music, dance, and ancient rituals, which have been handed down through the ages.

What are the Major Festivals of Madurai?

The largest and the most popular festival of Madurai is Chithirai Festival. It is celebrated in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April and May) and continues for a whole month.

This festival is significant and it depicts the divine wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar which is performed with great enthusiasm involving decorated elephants, floats, and thousands of devotees filling the streets.

The Madurai District website mentions: “It is celebrated every year on the Full moon day of the Tamil Month Chithirai. (April/May). Legend says that Lord Vishnu, as Alagar, rode on a golden horse to Madurai to attend the celestial wedding of Goddes Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Siva). This festival is marked by solemnity and serenity.”

Madurai hosts Pongal with a lot of energy and enthusiasm as it is the harvesting festival of Tamil Nadu. It is a 3 day festival that typically occurs in mid January, during which people express their gratitude to the Sun, nature and the cattle for a good harvest.

The Madurai District states: “Pongal or the Harvest Festival is celebrated by way of paying tribute to the Sun, Nature and cattle for helping them with a rich harvest. The 3 day festival is celebrated with great pomp and splendour. Bogi is celebrated the first day. Homes are given a fresh lick of paint and old articles are removed. The second day is Pongal, the main festival. Sugarcanes, Pongal (a sweet variety of rice) and festoons of mango leaves mark this auspicious day. Mattu Pongal is celebrated the third day. On this day people pay tribute to the cattle for bringing in prosperity.”

In August/September Avani Moola Festival is celebrated, which commemorates the coronation of Lord Sundareswarar. In this festival, the priests act out a play known as Lila and they speak of the 64 miracles of Lord Shiva that rescued this city of Madurai from great dangers.

The Madurai District website mentions: “This festival during August / September celebrates the coronation of Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Siva). Daily A “Lila” or play is performed where the temple priest recite the stories of Lord Siva in 64 miracles, which protected the city of Madurai from adversity.
