Padmanabhapuram Palace: India’s Oldest and Largest Wooden Palace

The oldest and largest wooden palace of India, Padmanabhapuram Palace, exemplifies a wonderful blend of traditional Thachu Shastra. The palace shows the unique science of carpentry and traditional architecture of Kerala.

Padmanabhapuram Palace was built in the year 1601 CE by Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal and was initially the seat of rulers prior to moving to Thiruvanthapuram by the rulers of Travancore.

The exceptional feature of Padmanabhapuram Palace is that this heritage site has endured years of monsoons and moisture and still stood strong without damaging its beautiful wooden ceilings, pillars and huge gables.

Where is Padmanabhapuram Palace?

The Padmanabhapuram Palace is located in Veli Hills in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. The whole palace grounds are under the jurisdiction of the Government of Kerala due to its strong history and continuing cultural heritage.

Being situated about 37 kilometers away from Thiruvananthapuram, the palace acts as an important cultural connection between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Every year, many people visit the place.

Why is Padmanabhapuram Palace Made of Wood?

Padmanabhapuram Palace is entirely built of wood because of the availability of good quality teak and rosewood in the forests of the Western Ghats.

The reason for using timber in the Padmanabhapuram Palace is that timber offers ventilation and flexibility in construction, which keeps the chambers cool and very sustainable even in hot tropical summers of Tamil Nadu.

Moreover, the ancient builders of the region were adept at building wooden joints without the use of iron nails. They used natural resins, juices and charcoal mixtures to treat the timber, thereby ensuring that the structure was completely safe from termites and moisture damage.

Important Aspects of Padmanabhapuram Palace

Constructed completely of wood, except for the granite walls on the outside, the Palace is known for its sloping roofs, wooden columns, wooden beams and brackets, latticed windows, and wall paintings.

The woods include teak, rosewood, and jackfruit wood. The Thai Kottaram is the oldest building in the Padmanabhapuram Palace complex.

The important aspects of Padmanabhapuram Palace include:

  1. Mantrasala (Council Hall of the King) with the renowned polished floor constructed from a unique mixture of egg white, lime, and charcoal from the coconut shell.

  2. The magnificently erected Uppirikka Malika is highly admired for the ancient mural paintings and the holy artifacts such as Sapramancha Kattil (a special poster bed crafted with 64 kinds of medicinal wood).

  3. Oottupura (dining room) which was capable of hosting several thousand guests in one sitting.

  4. The Mani Meda (Clock Tower) is a 300-year-old Roman numeral clock that still works properly to date.

  5. The palace also has a Darbar Hall inside the palace, which has shining black floors and artistic carvings on the walls of deities.

Moreover, there are also beautiful 17th century paintings, an arms exhibition, and an indigenous clock tower, which is working accurately till this day. In terms of educational value, these objects stand for the highest craftsmanship of the region and give great insight into the governance practices of medieval South India.
