Who was Prafulla Chandra Ghosh?
Prafulla Chandra Ghosh was an intellectual-politician who embodied the intellectual and moral ideals of the freedom struggle. He was born in 1891 in Malikanda, Dacca (now Bangladesh) and was a very brilliant student. He also obtained a doctorate in Chemistry and became the first Indian to be a Deputy Assay Master at the Calcutta Mint.
Although he had a bright scientific career, he was moved by the call to independence. He left his job in the government and joined the Non-Cooperation Movement. His close friendship with Mahatma Gandhi made him adopt a simple way of life and also his belief in non-violence. Before independence, he served many years on the Congress Working Committee.
Challenges During His Tenure
Prafulla Chandra Ghosh was burdened with the monumental challenge of stabilizing a new state that was created as a result of Partition. His tenure as the first chief minister of West Bengal was short lived, just 143 days. This brief time was characterized by the state having to deal with a huge number of East Pakistan refugees. The administrative machine was forced to be constructed afresh and the economy was in a dire need.
He also had to contend with a lot of internal problems in the state unit of the Indian National Congress. His early exit was caused by political friction and disagreements on the issue of policy. In January 1948 he resigned from his position. He was followed by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, commonly referred as the “Architect of modern West Bengal”.
Political Career and Legacy
Ghosh did not retire from politics after the resignation. He continued to be a vocal figure in the governance of the state. At a later time, he quit the Congress party to establish Krishak Mazdoor Praja Party.
In November 1967 he again assumed the Chief Minister position. This second term was in a coalition government called the Progressive Democratic Front. But this was also a short term as it lasted until February 1968. He died in 1983 and he left behind a legacy of academic excellence and political integrity.
