A bridge is an infrastructure marvel that is generally built to pass any type of obstruction such as water bodies or valleys. Bridges have been in use since the prehistoric times. The earliest form of bridges was stepping stones and wood logs.
The first evidence of bridge-building is traced back to Babylon in 4000 BC. Early civilisations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China built timber structures. Around the 13th century AD, Greeks developed corbel arch bridges such as the Arkadiko Bridge.
Around 500 to 400 AD, Romans utilised concrete and stone to build semi-circular arch bridges that have lasted over 2,000 years. The oldest existing stone bridge in China is the Anji Bridge.
With the Renaissance in 15th- and 16th-century Europe, the design of bridges was revolutionised. The 19th century saw stone replaced with cast-iron and steel for the development of suspension bridges. The 20th and 21st centuries saw the development of cable-stayed bridges and much massive bridge infrastructure.
