Eligibility Criteria
Before looking at the ranks, it is essential to confirm that all basic requirements established by the Council of NITs and JoSAA are fully met:
- Academic Qualification: Completion of the Class 12 (or equivalent) board examination is mandatory. The curriculum must include Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, alongside one elective such as Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a Technical Vocational subject.
- Marks: A minimum aggregate of 75% marks in the Class 12 board exams is generally required. For candidates in the SC, ST, or PwD categories, this eligibility is set at 65%.
- Entrance Exam: Admission is determined based on the JEE Main 2026 All India Rank (AIR). No independent entrance test is conducted for entry into NIT Rourkela.

Admission Process
Getting into NIT Rourkela involves a centralized system. Once the JEE Main results are out, the journey follows these steps:
- JoSAA Counseling: A majority of seats are allocated via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). The process requires formal registration and the submission of a preferred list of branches at NIT Rourkela, ranked by priority.
- Seat Allotment: Allocation is determined by the All India Rank, specific category (General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, etc.), and the current seat availability within each engineering department.
- CSAB Special Rounds: In the event of vacancies following the standard JoSAA rounds, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) facilitates special rounds. These sessions provide an additional opportunity for admission into core branches for those with slightly higher ranks.
- Document Verification: After a seat is finalized, the procedure involves online reporting, payment of admission fees, and the verification of academic and category documents to secure the enrollment.
