Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE Schools will now begin the process for Class 11 admissions. The board today declared the CBSE Class 10 Results 2026. While there is another board that will be conducted, schools will now begin the process for admission to next class based on the marks scored by students. This brings students and parents to the most important decision - which subjects to choose in Class 11.
To begin with, here is a hearty congratulations to all the students for their Class 10 board results. And we all know what this day means – people asking you the two important questions – how your result was and what next. Let us try and answer the latter for you so that you can make an informed choice.
CBSE 11th Admission under Two Board Formula – When and How
Before we begin, here is a simple change all parents need to know. From 2026, CBSE has started two boards for Class 10 students. Whether or not your child is planning to appear for the May examinations, the board will only release the final mark sheet when the result of second board exams is released in the month of June. Schools, accordingly, will only be able to close the admissions process after the result is declared. However, CBSE has allowed schools to initiate and grant provisional admission to students based on their performance in February examination.
CBSE Rules for Class 11 Admissions, Subject Selection, Change of School
CBSE schools operate at secondary and senior secondary levels. Secondary or Class 10 and Senior Secondary of Class 11 and 12. Once the Class 10 results are declared, students have the option to changing their schools. All students of CBSE are eligible to seek admission in any of the CBSE affiliated schools in Class 11, basis their Class 10 results.
Also, students who have passed Class 10 from any other State Board are also eligible to apply to any CBSE Senior Secondary School for Class 11 admissions. NIOC is also recognised by CBSE and schools are required as per affiliation bye-laws to honour admission request for the same.
Documents Needed
Students will need to submit Class 10 Passing Certificate/ Marksheet duly signed by the designated authority for admission. In case of CBSE students, due to two board examination, the CBSE 10th Marksheet will not be released till June. The board, however, has asked schools to honour the provisional marksheet for CBSE 10th result as released after first board to offer provisional admissions.
Transfer Certificate from previous school will also be needed but not mandatory for Class 11 admissions in CBSE schools.
For students moving from other board to CBSE in Class 11, a Migration Certificate will also be required, duly signed by authorised signatory. Remember, parents/ students do not require any special permission from CBSE.
Please note, CBSE Class 11 admissions are to be completed will August 31 of the academic session. This is because registration for Class 11 will begin in September. After August 31, any admission will need board’s permission.
CBSE Class 11 Subject Selection: Board Guidelines
Students and parents need to note that there is no 'stream' in CBSE. Schools are required to offer students any subject combination the student so wishes. The board has divided the subjects in three distinct groups - Group L or Languages, Group A or Electives and Group S or Skill Subjects. Students have been given a choice to choose any subjects provided that the combination of Group L, Group A and Group S is followed.
In accordance to NEP (National Education Policy), CBSE students have an option of choosing of the of subjects, provided they follow a simple combination of one Language plus a minimum of four subjects. The combination rules for Subject Selection in Class 11 are as follows:
1. Every student must choose a minimum of 5 subjects and a maximum of 6 subjects for Class 11 and 12.
2. First Subject is required to be either English or Hindi - in this, students have an option of
3. Second subject can be either a second language (Hindi or English - provided they are one core and one elective. In case the first language chosen is English Elective, the second subject, if chosen from languages and is Hindi, then it has to be Hindi Core and not elective. Students can also choose any regional language or foreign language. For Second subject, any subject from Group A can also be chosen.
4. For 3rd, 4th and 5th subject, students have a freedom to choose any of the combinations - namely - any subject from Group A, any subject from Group S or a combination of Group A and Group S.
5. Sixth subject is optional and student scan choose any of the subjects from either of the groups for sixth subject. This is purely optional and student may choose not to appear for the sixth subject.
Please note, first five subjects are considered main subject and sixth is considered optional subject. This can be used by CBSE for calculating passing percent for the student in case he/she fails in one of the main subjects. If the student passes in 6th and fails in one of the main 5, he or she will be given the pass certificate.
