What is Yellowstone Volcano? Is it Near Eruption?

Last Updated: Apr 15, 2026, 18:19 IST

As of April 1, 2026, the Yellowstone Volcano is at a NORMAL alert level with a GREEN aviation code. March 2026 saw 61 earthquakes and a hydrothermal eruption at Black Diamond Pool. Ground deformation monitoring shows a pause in the uplift along the north caldera rim.

Yellowstone Volcano is a supervolcano that is active and which is found in Yellowstone National Park which is in the United States in parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. It boasts a huge caldera, approximately 30 by 45 miles in size, created as a result of ancient cataclysmic eruptions and drives the famous park geysers, hot springs, and hydrothermal features.

The volcanic field of Yellowstone took two million years to be formed in the course of three significant cycles. The last 2.1 million years old eruption covered more than 5,790 square miles with ash and the latest 640,000 year old eruption emptied the magma chamber and led to the caldera collapse.

Later lava flows filled in most of the caldera, the last of which, Pitchstone Plateau, happened 77,000 years ago. The system is placed on a hot spot, a plume of molten rock that is emerging through the center of the earth leaving a line of calderas through the Snake River Plain.

Yellowstone Volcano: Current Activity

According to the April 1, 2026, Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) monthly release, the alert level is NORMAL and the aviation color code is GREEN, which means there is background activity.

In March 2026, there were 61 earthquakes (largest M1.9), including a swarm to the north of West Yellowstone. Ground deformation indicates a pause in uplift of the north caldera rim, which started in July 2025 and ceased by the middle of January 2026; caldera subsidence is still ongoing, but faintly.

Geyser activity One March eruption of Echinus (following an eruption of the geyser in February, after it had erupted about 40 times) and a hydrothermal event at Black Diamond Pool.

Eruption Risk

Yellowstone is not on the verge of eruption; no evidence is found of a supereruption or even lava flow. The recent research indicates low concentrations of molten rocks in the reservoirs, without heat and pressure to erupt.

The 86,000 hidden micro-quakes (2008-2022) were discovered by AI analysis, which indicated a greater baseline seismicity due to fluid movement, but USGS confirms normal levels. The odds of a supereruption are approximately one per 730,000 years or so; smaller eruptions such as hydrothermal explosions are more frequent but confined in space and time.

In case of future large eruptions, they are predicted to occur hundreds of thousands of years later, probably in the northeast caldera.

In the event of a future large eruption, it is estimated to take place hundreds of thousands of years away, probably in the northeast caldera.

Monitoring and Safety

The YVO collaborating with USGS, University of Utah, among others, monitors seismicity, GPS deformation, gas emissions, and thermal data. Instruments such as continually monitored GPS record changes in the millimeters, showing that the caldera breathes at a rate of inches per year.

Viral speculations of imminent disaster are being refuted; business is at 30-year average. Park warnings on hydrothermal dangers and not volcanic danger should be paid attention to by the visitors.
