QS World University Rankings 2027: IIT Delhi Jumps to 118th Globally, India Leads G20 Growth
The Quacquarelli Symonds World Rankings 2027 have been released. IIT Delhi achieved 118th position globally while India recorded the fastest growth among G20 nations with 52 top universities featured in the rankings.
IIT Delhi has reached 118th position globally in the QS World Rankings 2027, matching the best rank ever achieved by an Indian institution and becoming the biggest highlight of this year’s results. At the same time, India has recorded the fastest growth among G20 nations, showing how quickly the country’s higher education system is expanding on the global stage. India now has 52 universities in the rankings, a sharp rise from just 14 in 2017, marking a 271% increase in a decade.
India’s QS 2027 Rise Goes Beyond the IITs
India is now the fifth-most-represented higher education system in the world in the QS Rankings. What makes this year especially important is that the progress is no longer limited to the IITs. A total of 43 non-IIT institutions are now part of the rankings, compared to only 7 in 2017. Out of the 18 Indian institutions that achieved their highest-ever rank this year, 13 are non-IITs. Two Indian institutions have also entered the rankings for the first time. The country’s academic presence has spread wider too, with institutions from 19 states and union territories now represented, up from 9 a decade ago.
India has also shown strong performance in research and employability. The country now has 11 universities in the world’s top 100 for Citations per Faculty, 6 in the top 100 for Employer Reputation and the third-largest research output globally. More than half, or 52%, of Indian universities improved their rank this year.
Employment Gains, Global Reputation and India’s Top Performers
One of the standout gains came from the University of Mumbai, which jumped 70 places to reach 25th globally for employment outcomes. In fact, more than one-third of Indian universities improved their employer reputation scores, and every university in India’s top 10 performed better on this measure.
The broader QS 2027 picture shows that India’s top-performing institutions are now coming from multiple categories, not just premier engineering campuses. However, there is still room to improve in international faculty recruitment, international student enrolment, and global academic reputation. Even so, the 2027 rankings make one thing clear: India’s rise in global education is no longer only an IIT story.
