IIT Gandhinagar: Two specialized postgraduate programs, a Master of Design (MDes) and a Master of Technology (MTech) in Maritime Engineering, have been formally announced by the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN). These programs will start in the 2026–2027 academic year. The institute's strategic focus on multidisciplinary education and local industrial demands is reflected in these additions.
The MDes program is intended to be a special combination of engineering, technology, and social sciences. It is based on the knowledge of IITGN's Design and Innovation Center. The curriculum emphasizes "systems thinking" and cooperative problem-solving by going beyond conventional design constraints. It aims to equip students with the holistic perspective required to tackle complex, real-world challenges through user-centric and technologically sound solutions.
In addition, the MTech in Maritime Engineering fills a critical educational gap in India's maritime industry. The program covers important areas like ocean infrastructure, marine logistics, and international regulatory frameworks and is specifically designed to take advantage of Gujarat's position as a leader in port activity and cargo traffic. It is anticipated that this course would close the gap between scholarly research and the real-world needs of the blue economy. By starting these initiatives, IIT Gandhinagar maintains its reputation as a progressive organization, producing a new generation of experts who can spearhead innovation in the high-stakes field of maritime engineering as well as the creative design sector.
