In a significant shift for its postgraduate technical programs, Delhi University, DU, has decided to accept the scores of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, GATE, for admission to its M.Tech in Microwave and Communications Engineering. This marks the first instance where the university will utilise GATE merit for a PG degree, moving away from its traditional reliance solely on the internal or CUET-based entrances.

The decision follows recent approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). According to Haneet Gandhi, DU’s Dean of Admissions, while GATE scores have previously been used for PhD enrollments, their application for M. Tech admissions is a strategic move to align the university with national technical education standards.

DU MTech Admission 2026:  Importance to GATE Qualifiers over CUET PG

The Delhi University has outlined a clear ranking for its 2026-27 admission cycle. Candidates with a valid GATE score will receive the first preference during the allotment process. Only if seats remain vacant after the GATE-based rounds will the university consider students based on the CUET PG 2026 performance.

This M.Tech program currently offers 30 seats, which are distributed across various categories, including the following:-

  • Unreserved has 13 seats,
  • OBC have 8 seats,
  • SC  has 4 seats,
  • ST, which has 2 seats,
  • EWS, which has 3 seats.

The eligibility criteria are that the student must hold a B.Tech or BE or a B.Sc Engineering degree in relevant fields such as Electronics and Communication, Electrical, or Radio Physics.

Importantly, the University of Delhi has clarified that admissions for this specific M.Tech program will not be conducted through the standard Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS-PG) website. Instead, DU has introduced a dedicated admission website that will be launched, allowing interested students to apply and submit the required details and GATE scores directly for the Microwave and Communication Engineering stream.
