He studied in England in the late 1870s and after his return to India published several volumes of poetry beginning from the 1880s. But made all the difference was a little book of poems, called Gitanjali.

On the morning of November 13, 1913, Tagore received the news that the Nobel Committee chose him for the Nobel Prize because of this book.
