The University of Delhi has announced a direct PhD pathway for students who finish its four year undergraduate programme. This new route lets eligible candidates move into doctoral studies without completing a master’s degree. The decision will benefit the first batch of FYUP students completing the programme in 2026. DU Direct PhD Eligibility and Approval

The eligibility for DU direct PhD admission is simple and clear. Students who complete the FYUP with a minimum 7.5 CGPA can apply directly for PhD programmes. For SC, ST students the minimum eligibility has been set as 7 CGPA. The university said the provision has been incorporated into its ordinance after approval from the academic council and executive council. DU has aligned the academic progression of fourth year students with the PhD programmes. This alignment enables graduates to apply directly after completing the FYUP. Students completing the FYUP are not required to do a masters programme because the required academic pathway is already provided by the university.

What This New PhD Route Means for Students

The university’s first FYUP batch began in the 2022-23 academic session with 75948 students taking admission. Of these more than 40,000 students exited after the third year in 2025. Around 35,943 students continued into the fourth year. The Fourth year programme is designed to bring research and entrepreneurship into undergraduate education. This design also aligns Indian degrees with global standards. Students opting for academic projects in the fourth year are required to identify a real time problem and work towards finding a solution. This hands-on approach prepares students for the DU direct PhD route. 

This decision simplifies the academic journey for FYUP students and encourages a research mindset from an early stage. The DU direct PhD pathway removes the extra year of master’s degree for many students. Students who meet the CGPA conditions should prepare their research proposals in advance. Everyone else should watch university announcements for the next academic session. This step also gives students a clear view of their academic path from the very first year.
