Who is Gen Syed Aamer Raza? Pakistan’s 2nd Most Powerful Figure After Asim Munir

The rise of a veteran individual to the highest position in the institution indicates a development in military affairs in Pakistan. There has been much discussion recently about General Syed Aamer Raza due to his recent promotion to the position of the first Commander of the National Strategic Command.

As per defense experts, General Raza is the second most powerful figure in the military of Pakistan after Field Marshal Asim Munir which underlines his experience and professional career spanning over 40 years.

A Four-Decade Military Journey

In 1988, General Syed Aamer Raza was commissioned in the elite 6th Lancers (Watson's Horse) from the Officers Training School in Mangla and his public service career began. In nearly four decades of his career, he climbed up the hierarchy and acquired hands-on skills regarding conventional warfare, tanks, and regional operations.

His experience includes:

• He has commanded his troop, namely the 6th Lancers.

• He has commanded an armored brigade and an infantry brigade during his service in South Waziristan.

• He has experience of General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 37th Mechanized Division at Kharian.

• He has also served in various key staff posts such as Chief of Staff at II Corps and Director General, Weapons & Equipment Directorate at GHQ Rawalpindi.

Early Life, Birth and Education

Although the exact details regarding his precise birth date are not well publicized, General Syed Aamer Raza had commenced his professional career way back in late1980s. He started with basic military training at Officers Training School Mangla, laying the groundwork of a long journey in the military of the Armored Corps.

His academic and professional background consists of varied reputable institutions. 

• Officers Training School Mangla: Completed the initial military training and tactical ground preparations. 

• Command and Staff College Quetta: Studied advanced military tactics and later returned as a teacher and Chief Instructor. 

• University of Nottingham, UK: Started an international academic career by getting acquainted with International Relations. 

• National Defence University Islamabad: Undertook strategic and national security studies.

Academic Rigor and Institutional Shaping

General Raza did not only establish military operations; he has also devoted a lot of time and resources to education and the development of military doctrine. He has graduated from reputable institutions such as the Command and Staff College at Quetta and the National Defence University (NDU) at Islamabad. As if that were not enough, Raza has also met the international educational requirements by obtaining a degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham in the UK.

The zeal of General Raza for the development of future military leaders can be proven by the experience that he has gained in teaching and conducting learning activities.

Reforming Defense Production at Heavy Industries Taxila

In April 2020, former Major General Raza took charge as Chairman of Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT). During this period, he was promoted to Lieutenant General in October 2022 and transformed indigenous defense production in Pakistan. 

In particular, during his time at the helm, HIT produced the Haider tank, which is a powerful tank based on the VT-4 Chinese design, on account of a valuable transfer of technology contract, excellent job done by HIT to grow modern armored production capacity in Pakistan.

Moving up in Command: From Lahore Corps to Chief of General Staff

Mr. Raza was promoted to the position of Commander of IV Corps in Lahore in May 2023 due to changes in the national security landscape and the leadership of the army. By showcasing his administrative competence in managing sensitive commands, including army corps, he was promoted to the rank of General Headquarters, where he served as Chief of General Staff in January 2025.

Changes in Pakistan's military structure were made after the amendment in laws and the constitution, as a result of which the National Strategic Command was established under the National Command Authority.

• Promotion to Four-Star General: He was promoted to four-star General by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in July 2026, becoming the first Commander of the National Strategic Command.

• Honor from the State: Just after he assumed command, he was awarded India’s highest military honour- Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) by President Asif Ali Zardari.

• The Power Play: Even though Field Marshal Asim Munir holds the overall position of Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, General Raza’s position of having command of the newly formed strategic and nuclear operational structure grants him the place of second most powerful military leader in the country.
