Brazil is expected to supply most of India’s imported sugar. Brazil is the world’s largest sugar exporter. Indian traders are expected to source raw sugar from Brazil because of its large export availability. However, the entire 10-lakh-tonne quota is not exclusively reserved for Brazil.

How Much Sugar Will India Import?

India has allowed imports of up to 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar. This is equivalent to 1 million metric tonnes. The imports will be allowed duty-free under the approved quota. The import window is open until October 31, 2026.

Why Is India Importing Sugar?

Domestic sugar prices have increased sharply. Sugar availability has come under pressure. Demand is expected to rise during the upcoming festive season that is why imports will help increase supplies in the domestic market.

India can source large quantities from Brazil through international trade. However, Brazilian sugar shipments can take several weeks to reach India.

What Is Raw Sugar?

Raw sugar is partially processed sugar. It has some molasses and is generally darker than refined sugar. It can be sent to refineries for further processing. After refining it can be converted into white sugar for consumption.
