Personality of the Day: Who Was Major Dhyan Chand?
Major Dhyan Chand Singh was born on 29 August 1905 in Prayagraj, which was earlier known as Allahabad. His father served in the British Indian Army and he was also a hockey player. This got Dhyan Chand involved in the sport at an early age.
The PIB mentions: “An all-time great of the fast-moving game of hockey, Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905.”
Because his father’s job required frequent transfers, Major Dhyan Chand spent much of his childhood moving from one place to another. During his early years, he did not show a strong interest in hockey. However, things began to change after he joined the army.
At the age of 17, he got enlisted in the Indian Army, and it was there that he started taking hockey seriously.
The PIB further states: “He began playing the game with Jhansi Heroes. Enrolment in the Army in 1922 gave him an opportunity to gain proficiency in the best standards. Dhyan Chand then caught the eye of the selectors and was chosen to play in the inter-provincial Championships. With his powerful wrists and bursts of speed he made a mark and impressed the country’s hockey administrators. He was chosen for the team that played in matches in New Zealand. Coming into prominence Dhyan Chand got opportunity to play in Australia also on the way back home.”

Major Dhyan Chand became famous due to his outstanding performances in international hockey tournaments, and he performed exceptionally well in the Olympic Games too.

Awards and Recognition
Major Dhyan Chand’s contribution to Indian sports has been recognised in many ways. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1956, which is one of the highest civilian honours in India.
To honour his achievements, the Government of India celebrates 29 August which was his birthday as National Sports Day. Further, a stadium in New Delhi has also been named after him which is the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award is also named after him.
The District Jhansi website states: “The Government of India awarded Chand India’s third highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan in 1956. His birthday, 29th August, is celebrated as National Sports Day in India every year. India’s highest sporting honour, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award is named after him.”
